Obituary

Marie Lorraine Mathews, age 92, a longtime Lynnfield resident, died Saturday, October 1 at the Academy Manor Nursing Home in Andover.

Born in Medford on April 19, 1930 she was the daughter of the late Ferdinand D. and Ellen F. (Brennan) Bates.

Marie was raised and educated in Winchester and graduated from Winchester High School and received her associates degree from Mount Ida College. During high school, she met the love of her life, Howard "Larry" Mathews, and the two married in 1952, settled in Arlington for a time and started their family before ultimately making their home in Lynnfield. Together they were members of the Bear Hill Golf Club in Stoneham. Marie loved summers spent boating along the back side of Cranes Beach in Ipswich, MA. Her main focus, however, was raising her children, and her "family first" mentality was evident in all aspects of her life.

She was the beloved wife of the late Howard Larry Mathews, whom she shared many wonderful years of marriage. She was the loving mother of Douglas H. Mathews and his wife Karen of Middleton and Lynda M. DiGiacomo of Burlington and was the former mother-in-law of Arthur A. DiGiacomo of North Reading. She was the cherished grandmother of Dana L. Bloom and her husband David and Brian D. Mathews. She is also survived by her great grandchildren Ava and Liam Bloom.

Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Friday from 10am-12pm, followed by a Funeral Service in the Funeral Home at 12pm. Interment, Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Rd, Waltham, MA 02452 or to Northeast Animal Shelter, 347 Highland Ave., Salem, MA 01970.
